Mexico's 20-year-old Saul Alvarez will return to the ring on March 5, perhaps in Los Angeles, and, potentially against WBA welterweight (147 pounds) champ Vyacheslav Senchenko, according to Golden Boy Promotions' CEO, Richard Schaefer.
Eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts) will defend his WBO welterweight belt against three-division, five-time champion, Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs) on May 7 in an HBO pay per view televised, Top Rank Promotions bout from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where Pacquiao's WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown will not be on the line.
There is also 24-year-old junior middleweight and middleweight (160 pounds) prospect Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (40-0-1, 30 KOs), the Mexican-born, son of the former world champion by the same name against whom a bout with Alvarez would be a massive promotion.
"Obviously, in the future, that would be a very big fight," said Alvarez, who has fought on American soil four times. "If we both keep winning and we keep getting better, it could be a very big, very good fight."
Golden Boy Promotions' President and former world champion, Oscar De La Hoya, has praised Alvarez (35-0-1, 26 KOs) as the next big star out of Mexico, and one whose potential goes far beyond defeating Senchenko (31-0, 20 KOs).
Alvarez has been compared favorably to Mexican greats such as 37-year-old WBO and WBA lightweight (135 pounds) titlist Juan Manuel Marquez (51--5-1, 38 KOs), come-backing, 34-year-old former three-time world champion, Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KOs), and 36-year-old, five-time, three-division champion, Marco Antonio Barrera (66-7, 43 KOs).
Marquez is widely considered to be the country's premiere boxer. Morales is the last man to beat Pacquiao, who is promoted by Top Rank Promotions. Morales has an eye toward a showdown opposite Marquez. Morales lost two out of three fights in a trilogy with Barrera whose legendary status, for Mexicans, rivals the one between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
A winner of 31 consecutive fights during a run that has included 11 knockouts in the past 13 bouts, Alvarez was asked by FanHouse how he would do against Pacquiao.
"What I would have to work on is to be fast. I might not be as fast as him, but I would have to be fast as well. Basically, styles make fights," said Alvarez.
"So Manny Pacquiao's very fast against a guy who stands right in front of him," said Alvarez. "But if you give him angles and box him, he doesn't look quite as fast."
