Polish-born former cruiserweight (200 pounds) champion Tomasz Adamek (pictured at right, on theleft), of Jersey City, N.J., thrilled the partisan fans at his adopted Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., with Thursday night's fifth-round stoppage of New York's Vinny Maddalone (pictured at far right). The 36-year-old Maddalone (33-7, 24 KOs) beat the count after being dropped for the only time in the fight by a left hook, only to be battered senseless before referee Steve Smoger responded to a signal from Maddalone's corner to step in, protect the Queens resident, and end the fight at the mark of two minutes, 17 seconds.
"I felt he was going down, but he got back up," Adamek told Ryan Songalia of BoxingScene.com. "I thought maybe I could hit him a few more times and he would go down again. Vinny is a warrior."
The win was the fifth straight as a heavyweight and the 13th consecutive triumph overall by Adamek, (43-1, 28 KOs), who has not lost since February of 2007 when he was dethroned as WBC light heavyweight (175 pounds) titlist by Chad Dawson.
