Andre Berto-Victor Ortiz, Amir Khan Fights In Play For April 16

The promoters of WBC welterweight (147) titlist Andre Berto (pictured above, at right), of Winter Haven, Fla., and southpaw junior welterweight (140 pounds) contender Victor Ortiz, of Oxnard, Calif., have confirmed that negotiations are ongoing for a potential clash between the two on April 16, according to Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com.

The fight featuring Berto (27-0, 21 knockouts) and Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KOs) would take place as part of an HBO televised split-site, double-header of an event that could match WBA junior welterweight king Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KOs) of England against Lamont Peterson (28-1-1, 14 KOs) of Washington, D.C., or another opponent, according to Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

"What would happen is that, you know, Amir Khan is definitely fighting in the United Kingdom on April 16, we don't have any update on any opponent yet. We're talking to three or four different opponents for Amir Khan, but I really don't want to disclose who those three or four possibilities are," said Schaefer.

"Lamont Peterson is still one of them, I can say that. But, we are determined to lock in the opponent next week. We're pretty close to getting this done. HBO is going to televise," said Schaefer. "The idea is to team it up with a delay from England with Amir Khan's fight with the live fight here in the United States. The live fight which is being discussed is Andre Berto against Victor Ortiz."
