UFC 123: George Sotiropoulos Submits Joe Lauzon

by Michael David SmithGeorge Sotiropoulos showed once again on Saturday night that he's one of the best ground fighters in the lightweight division in mixed martial arts, submitting Joe Lauzon with a second-round kimura at UFC 123.

"I want to face the best, I want to earn what I get, I want to make a case for the belt," Sotiropoulos said after the win, which improved his record to 14-2. "I'm going to keep making that case."

Sotiropoulos is making the case that he deserves a lightweight title shot, and he'll get that shot in 2011 if he keeps winning.

Former NBA star Glen Rice is an MMA promoter

Everyone wants a piece of the MMA game. That includes a former hoops star who made $66.7 million during his time in the NBA. Glen Rice is an MMA convert and he's got a card coming up Thursday night in South Florida.

"They're conditioned athletes. Their workouts are extremely difficult," Rice said. "Me as being an ex-professional basketball player, we worked hard but we didn't work as hard as these guys do."

Rice's G-Force promotions has also booked Trick Daddy to perform at the Bank United Center. The card has a mix of male and female fights. Rice and fighters Jessica Aguilar and Mike Vallejo appeared on WQAM in Miami to push Bad Blood 4

Aguilar, a 2010 Bellator featherweight tournament semifinalist, is on the card. She talked about her passion for fighting and said Mexican pride fuels her when she's getting battered. WQAM host Joe Rose got into the great history of Mexican fighters.

"But don't compare me to the Mexican who fought this weekend," Aguilar said referencing Antonio Margarito. "I don't like to talk. I like to do. I guess I think he deserved it for talking so bad."

Margarito suffered a unanimous-decision defeat at the hands of Manny Pacquiao. By the end of the fight, Margarito's eyes were closed and he had suffered a broken orbital bone. Aguilar said she doesn't believe Margarito's excuses about his illegal hand wrap before the Shane Mosley fight.

The main event of Bad Blood 4 features Dhafir Harris. In Florida, "Da Da 5000" is being talked about as Kimbo Slice 2.0.

Scott Coker Excited for Strikeforce's Heavyweights in 2011

Filed under:

With Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum and Josh Barnett among the names on the promotion's roster, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has singled out his heavyweight division as the one he's most excited for in 2011.

"I think we're going to finish [2010] off strong and I look forward to 2011 cause I think the thing we're getting real excited about is our heavyweight division," Coker said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "And I think you're going to see some great heavyweight matchups that people have been dying to see in the past."

Although Coker would not reveal any exact details, announcements could be made as soon as Dec. 4 during the promotion's year-end "Henderson vs. Babalu" event.

UFC 123 PPV opener: Lauzon fades again, Sotiropoulos wins by sub in the second

Joe Lauzon is great in short stints but he's got to learn how to pace himself. The last time he had a chance to break through into UFC's top five at 155 pounds, he gassed badly against Kenny Florian. The same thing happened tonight versus George Sotiropoulos in the first bout on the pay-per-view portion of UFC 123.

After a strong first round, Lauzon looked exhausted to the start of the second. Ninety seconds into the round, a Lauzon trip failed and the Aussie got into a dominant north-south position on the ground. Sotiropoulos got hold off Lauzon's arm in a kimura and nearly ripped the limb off. With the win at 2:43 of the second, Sotiropoulos moved to 7-0 with the promotion.

UPDATE: Sotiropoulos and Lauzon were given the fight of the night bonus, good for $80,000 each.

UPDATE II: UFC president Dana White announced that Sotiropoulos will fight Dennis Siver at UFC 127 in Sotiropoulos' native Australia.

Sotiropoulos (14-2, 7-0 UFC) admitted that he got off to a slow start.

"It was the calm before the storm," Sotiropoulos told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I knew I'd find my range and get in my shots."

Lauzon showed he's a high class fighter in the opening minutes. He was faster in the striking game, tagging Sotiropoulos with several clean rights. His takedown defense was excellent as well, but fatigue set in at around 90 seconds left in the first. Sotiropoulos got top control, providing a preview of what was to come in the second.

Lauzon (19-6, 6-3 UFC) came off his stool with his mouth open and was throwing sloppy, slow punches. Sotiropoulos reversed a Lauzon takedown attempt and moved immediately to north-south position. Once the kimura was locked on, Lauzon tapped almost instantly.

Sotiropoulos was a heavy favorite during Season 6 of "The Ultimate Fighter," but was upset in the semifinals by Tommy Speer. He battled injuries for much of 2008 into early 2009. Now healthy, and happy with his training camp, the Aussie has quickly emerged as a title contender with wins over Lauzon, Joe Stevenson and Kurt Pellegrino.

"I want to face the best," Sotiropoulos said. "I want to earn what I get. I want to make a case for the belt. I'll continue making my case."

Sotiropoulos asked the promotion for a quick turnaround. He'd like to fight in less than 13 weeks when the UFC visits Sydney, Australia on Feb. 27.

We're proud to introduce a new tutorial exclusively for COTW by former Disney and Marvel artist Damian Fulton, which shows the progression of one of his paintings: "An Eye for an Eye". We love Damian's imaginative world of characters and narratives, with urban and surf/beach culture clashes in Los Angeles, California central to his work, and of course in his words, "If you're the type that likes monsters, trucks, beaches and babes, you've come to the right place!".

B.J. Penn: I Know I'll Be UFC Lightweight Champion Again

by Michael David SmithBJ PennB.J. Penn is generally recognized as the best lightweight in MMA history, but after losing two straight fights to lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, he's now moving up to welterweight to face Matt Hughes at UFC 123. Penn apparently doesn't see it as a permanent move.

In an interview on SportsCenter Wednesday morning, Penn said that he doesn't view his two losses to Edgar this year as a sign that he's no longer competitive in the lightweight division. Instead, he thinks he's going to win his welterweight rubber match with Hughes and then move back down to be the best lightweight again.

MMA Marketplace: Black Friday specials

Just like turkey on Thanksgiving, big sales on the day after Thanksgiving is a tradition. That extends to MMA retailers, who will have some great discounts for this Friday.

-- MMA Warehouse has a wide variety of markdowns, on everything from the Tri-Coasta Korean Zombie shirt to the Georges St. Pierre garbage can. You can even get some fighter dolls for less than $10.

-- Six Deuce will take 25% off every order over $30, and free shipping to the U.S. and Canada for any order over $50. May we suggest the "Glorious Sweater of Absolute Victory" sweatshirt, patterned after Fedor Emelianenko's famous sweater?

-- MMA Stop has a coupon for free domestic shipping. Use it to buy the sweatshirt your brother dropped a not-so-subtle hint about.

Ricky Hatton rubbishes rumours of an Oscar De La Hoya bout

? Hatton angry at rumours suggesting he will fight De La Hoya
? The 32-year-old refused to rule out a comeback at some point

Ricky Hatton today described rumours he would fight Oscar De La Hoya as "absolute rubbish" ? although, remarkably, he still refuses to rule out a comeback.

The former world light-welterweight and welterweight champion, 32, whose last fight was a devastating second-round knockout by Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas 18 months ago, has shed nearly two and a half stones in the five weeks since leaving the Priory in Cheshire, where he was treated for depression.

This fuelled talk of a possible return against De La Hoya, whose last fight was also against Pacquaio, a seventh-round retirement in December, 2008.

"Oscar said he was angry over the story and I don't blame him," Hatton said today. I can say it is absolute rubbish. Nothing was ever said to me."

However, Hatton still refuses to put an end to talk that he will fight again. "As far as a comeback goes, I am still of the opinion I had 18 months ago. I have no ambition to come back.

"Even if I did, at this moment in time I am banned by the British Boxing Board of Control [after being filmed taking what appeared to be cocaine] so I am unable to make a decision whether I want to fight or not.

"Although I feel the board was correct in punishing me, hopefully in time they will offer my licence back and I will be free to make a decision on my future. After all I have done in boxing, I have the right to retire Ricky Hatton and nobody else.

"I have been five weeks out of rehab and dropped two-and-a-half stone. I used to drop that much in a 12-week training camp.

"I am not working as hard as I did when I was fighting [but], when I made the decision to enter rehab, I weighed 14st 6lb. Now I am down to 12 stone. I am feeling fantastic and I am happy.

"People are talking about a comeback because they see me healthy. They look at all that weight I have lost in five weeks and think he must be fighting.

"It is just because of the advice from people like Samir Kiami [his nutritionist] and the exceptional products I have been taking that I look so well."

Hatton's main focus is promotion. His next show is at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on 26 November, when his younger brother Matthew defends his European welterweight title against Switzerland's undefeated Roberto Belge.

Video: Is Andre Berto Next For Manny Pacquiao?

FanHouse gained exclusive entry in the locker room of WBC welterweight (147 pounds) titlist Andre Berto (27-0, 21 knockouts) moments after he scored a first-round knockout of Freddy Hernandez (29-2, 20 KOs) in an HBO televised defense.

Promoted by Lou DiBella, the 27-year-old Berto has been mentioned by Top Rank CEO Bob Arum as a consideration for WBO welterweight and WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao' (52-3-2, 38 KOs). Berto also wants WBA junior middleweight king Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs).

State of the Strikeforce Middleweights

by Michael David SmithIn the last three years, the Strikeforce middleweight title has been vacated more times than it's been defended, and 2010 has been another long year for the promotion's 185-pound division. Its champion, Jake Shields, whipped its big free agent acquisition, Dan Henderson -- and then promptly bolted for the UFC. And then a much-discussed middleweight tournament failed to materialize.

But there's some hope that Strikeforce will have big fights in the year ahead, even if the middleweight division fizzled in 2010. Below we look at what some of those big fights might be and where the middleweight belt is headed as we survey the state of the Strikeforce middleweight division.

Davis invents his own submission to take out Boetsch at UFC 123

Phil Davis looks more impressive every time he hits the Octagon. The former Penn State wrestler had only three fights under his belt in the UFC, but made Tim Boetsch look like the guy with little experience.

Davis absolutely dominated the grappling game against the former Div. 1 wrestler at Lock Haven. Then he worked some submission magic. With Boetsch pinned against the cage, Davis switched from a conventional arm lock and cranked his opponent's arm behind his back. The pain was too much to take for Boetsch, who tapped at 2:55 of the second round.

UPDATE: Davis' "Mr. Wonderful" submission nabbed him the submission of the night award and an $80,000 bonus.

Davis, 26, is a perfect 8-0 in MMA. He's beginning to move into top prospect status at light heavyweight along with Jon Jones and Ryan Bader. This was a return fight for Boetsch in the UFC, after four straight wins with smaller promotions.

Scott Smith Planning for a 'Slugfest' With Paul Daley

Most fighters would prefer to avoid exchanging punches with British striker Paul Daley, but Scott Smith, whose carved a niche for himself with his durability and willingness to engage punches in wars, says he's looking forward to a "slugfest" come Dec. 4 in St. Louis.

"Definitely looking for a standup fight," Smith said Tuesday on a Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu media call. "But this is mixed martial arts and you gotta be prepared for anything, so I'm working on all aspects of my game but I'm definitely planning on this being a slugfest."

Money will remove the obstacles between the Klitschkos and David Haye

The Klitschkos are both nice guys, but they are as tough as their fists when it comes to negotiating deals for fights

Will David Haye ever fight the Klitschkos? As someone who reckoned Manny Pacquiao was a certainty to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr this year, I'm in dodgy form, but I'd put money on it. Haye told me to. After all, the obstacles, unlike in the Pacquiao-Mayweather farce, are purely about money. And those are usually the easiest ones to solve in boxing because everyone suffers from an insatiable love of the stuff.

The other problem is ego. All of them, and their advisers, need to grow up a bit. For too long Haye (partly of his own making) has been portrayed as the foul-mouthed, inner-city villain, while Wladimir and Vitali are seen as educated Dudley Do-Rights from some Ukrainian laboratory for the perfect modern heavyweight machine. Neither party is innocent. They are all as stubborn as each other. In boxing. Who'd have thought it? But Haye has got under the skin of a few writers who are prepared to accept the Klitschko version of events with few questions, rather than Haye's.

The WBA champion has to take some blame for that, as his beheaded T-shirt stunt, sub-Ali rants and tasteless "gang rape" jibe at Audley Harrison, for instance, grabbed headlines and won him few friends. He does it to stir people up and buy the fights, of course. It has been smart business: his last three fights have been big pay-per-view hits, if marginal boxing attractions. So he upsets some of these sensitive flowers ? and they like the Klitschkos. There is a lot to like. The brothers are intelligent, accommodating, socially aware guys who come across well in person. But, what some columnists ignore is the Klitschkos are as tough as their fists when they do a deal.

The boring nuts and bolts of it are these: the Klitschkos' German TV broadcaster is RTL, free-to-air with huge audiences; Haye has worked in Germany with ARD, potentially bigger revenue-churners, and he's still working with Sauerland Events, the Klitschkos' rivals there and ARD's loyal boxing partner; Haye also has Sky pay-per-view in the UK ? and the brothers want a share of the Sky cash; Haye's not so keen, obviously, because that's where most of his money comes from.

Adam Booth, Haye's trainer and manager, has suggested several times that they put every revenue stream in one pot and split it 50-50, as long as they make the most money they can. The Klitschkos like that idea ? but they don't want to appear to be giving in. So they are sticking by RTL, while also asking for a piece of the action from Sky. They then spread stories that Haye refuses to fight in Germany, even though he has said he will go where the most money is.

So, why is Haye portrayed as the intransigent bad boy and the Klitschkos as saints? Because some boxing writers believe the last thing some other boxing writer has written. And I seriously don't know what to make of Frank Maloney's offer to put his heavyweight David Price in with Audley. Anyone who pays to watch that is a masochist and a fool.

BOB ARUM, THE NEW SANTA

Against all the odds, Bob Arum somehow turned Antonio Margarito, the hand-wraps cheat, into a martyr at the hands of his all-time cash cow, Manny Pacquiao. Now Uncle Bob is saying he won't let the Pacman ever again fight someone so big. Pacquiao has gone through eight divisions so far ? and he took enough big shots at light-middle last Saturday night in Texas to finish any career.

"At this point," Arum told boxingfutures.com, "I don't want to put Manny in with another big guy, a guy even bigger than Margarito. It's not that he couldn't beat them or that he couldn't handle them, but it's like a great racehorse. I can't keep putting him in with bigger, stronger guys without wearing him out.

"That fight really affected him physically. He took a lot more beating in that fight than he did in his others. He got hurt. He's banged up a little bit. It's tough giving away that kind of weight and size." Ample Bob would know ? even though the only weight and size he ever gave away was to Don King.

By the time they got in the ring, Pacquiao weighed 10st 8lb, fully 17lb lighter than his unbelievably tough Mexican opponent. Margarito, 5ft 11in, was also five inches taller and had a five-inch reach advantage. There was no difference in the size of their hearts. The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, is reporting that Shane Mosley has already asked Arum for a fight with Pacquiao. That's the same Mosley who once held the light-middleweight title and weighed 154lb in his last fight, a snore-draw against Sergio Mora in September.

His latest pledge will stretch Bob's ingenuity, though: Mosley has shares in Golden Boy Promotions, the biggest rival to Arum's Top Rank outfit. "I'm conducting business myself," Mosley said. "If I have to wait for these others, I'm not going to get the fight I want." Arum has promised to listen ? or get Shane a rematch with Miguel Cotto, who beat him on points three years ago.

And Mayweather? If he gets past the Las Vegas courts in January, when he has to answer assault charges (as does his uncle and trainer, Roger, on the same day), he will be up for a fight with Pacquiao some time in 2011 ? especially now the little bloke has been battered like never before. What a guy.

HOPKINS' LOW BLOW

Bernard Hopkins, not for the first time, has brought his own brand of class to the debate, claiming Pacquiao would lose to Mayweather because he has never fought a leading African American boxer.

He discounted Joshua Clottey, the Ghanaian Pacquiao beat in March. "Clottey is 'black,' but not a 'black boxer' from the States with a slick style," argues Hopkins, who got into similar racial stereotyping before he fought Joe Calzaghe.

Mayweather himself lowered the tone recently when he lampooned Pacquiao's Filipino roots. Fortunately for what is left of boxing's integrity, Manny has stayed out of this swamp.

Who would have thought a hundred years after Jack Johnson put James J Jeffries out of his race-stoked misery that boxing would still be embroiled in this sort of thing ? and generated by two black boxers?

Chuck Liddell's next challenge: Marriage

UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell is still undecided on the future of his fighting life, but he has made a major commitment in his personal life. Liddell recently proposed to his girlfriend Heidi Northcott.

According to People Magazine, Liddell popped the question after the two went on a helicopter ride of the Grand Canyon. On Twitter, they responded to congratulations messages from baseball player Brad Penny and Liddell's "Dancing with the Stars" castmate, Karina Smirnoff.

The pair have not shied away from headlines. They starred in a viral advertisement that showed Liddell and Northcott working out in the nude. Before his bout with Rich Franklin at UFC 115, Liddell credited Northcott for helping him refocus on training and fighting. He went on to get knocked out in that bout.

Strikeforce Rules Director Explains the Eye Poke Ruling

by Michael David SmithFriday night's Strikeforce fight between Marius Zaromskis and Waachiim Spiritwolf was over as soon as it started, with Zaromskis accidentally poking Spiritwolf in the eye just six seconds into the first round, causing an injury that prevented Spiritwolf from continuing.

The fight was officially declared a no contest, but there was confusion about the proper procedures for the referee and ringside doctor to end the bout, with the announcers on Showtime saying the ref improperly gave Spiritwolf five minutes to recover.

In an interview with MMAFighting.com, Strikeforce rules director Cory Schafer said the ref actually did a textbook-perfect job of applying the rules, and he discussed some of the misconceptions that fans and members of the media have about the rules of MMA. The full interview is below.

Matt Mitrione Squashes WWE Rumors

Roy Nelson, Shonie Carter -- they're all clearly interested in pursuing a career in World Wrestling Entertainment.

Matt Mitrione, on the other hand, is not. And quite frankly, he isn't sure why you think he is.

A rumor began circulating around the MMA world following Mitrione's win over Joey Beltran at UFC 119 that the former NFL player turned MMA fighter was going to cut short his promising fighting career to pursue a life as pro wrestler.

Not so, says Mitrione.

"That's such a weird situation that my name got thrown in the mix, and then after that, that Pat Barry's name got thrown in the mix," Mitirone said on Monday's episode of The MMA Hour. "Like, why is my training camp getting assaulted by the WWF people, man?"

Seagal is back! Zaftig action star works on Machida's defense

Team Blackhouse must be sold on the teachings of Steve Seagal. Just like he did before Anderson Silva's last fight at UFC 117, the action movie star turned Louisiana deputy, is seen working with another one of the team's fighters.

Seagal, a seventh-degree black belt in Aikido, takes Lyoto Machida through a number of positions. Most of the drills cover counterstriking and defense.

At the 1:23 mark, Seagal talks about how Mauricio "Shogun" Rua overwhelmed Machida with flurries. He tells Machida to move to the side and use the opponent's offense to counter. Machida is already one of the best counterstrikers in MMA. If Seagal can add anything to his game, look out!

Silva told Tatame that people need to stop cracking on Seagal. He learned a lot from the movie star.

Machida lost his UFC light heavyweight title to Shogun back in May. He steps back into the Octagon this weekend against Quinton Jackson.

Falcao beats Harris in a UFC 123 snoozefest

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- UFC newcomer Maiquel Falcao started his career with a win. He beat Gerald Harris in a 29-27, 29-28, 29-28 in a three-round decision that is not likely to get the Fight of the Night bonus.

The first round started slow. The two danced around each other for much of the round. Falcao landed the first strike at 2:40 into the first, and after a little more dancing, unloaded a series of punches. Harris went down to the ground, where Falcao continued to beat on him until he took his back. Even after Harris tried to slam Falcao off, he stayed on and sunk a rear naked choke. Harris was saved by the bell at the end of the first. Harris appeared to think the fight was over until he was directed to his corner.

Falcao came out for the second with a series of strikes that caused Harris to shoot for a knee. He was unsuccessful in the takedown, and Falcao moved behind for another rear naked choke attempt. Harris continued to survive and slowly got back to his feet. He slammed Falcao down, but the two returned to their feet. Harris tried for another takedown and held onto the attempt as the round ended.

In the third round, the two returned to their dancing ways, to the disgust of the crowd in suburban Detroit. They danced around the entire round, rarely engaging. The crowd booed lustily, but it didn't cause either fighter to want to engage.

Falcao is now 26-3, but this win over the 16-3 Harris is likely to be remembered as a poor debut for the Brazilian.

Falcao's submission win at UFC 123 blown by timekeeper

Maiquel Falcao was ripped to shreds throughout the third round of his fight against Gerald Harris. The criticism was well-deserved. He did nothing over the final five minutes of the fight, taking the safe route to victory during his UFC debut. That's not a great way to win over the promotion, Dana White and fans in attendance.

Amazingly, the 16,000-plus in attendance and everyone cageside failed to notice that the fight probably should've been over in the first round.

UPDATE: A good point from one of our readers. Even though Falcao still got a win, the error may have cost him the $80,000 submission of the night bonus. That said, Phil Davis' "Mr. Wonderful" improv submission was pretty sweet.

Falcao locked on a nasty rear-naked choke with 13 seconds left in the round. A little over seven seconds later, the horn sounded to end the round.

There was a clear timing error and no one noticed it.

This isn't the first time there's been clock issues in the Motor City.

NBA bettors thought there was a massive scandal in the mid 80's going down at Pistons' games.

There was a crew operating on the Las Vegas Strip, getting down all it could on NBA totals. Two things made this NBA betting syndicate unique. First, they only bet on Detroit Pistons games. Sometimes they bet 'over' and sometimes they bet 'under' but they always risked a ton of money.

Second, they were very, very good, at one point during their three-year run winning 16-of-18 games, a streak which tested the bottom lines of many books.

After a while, word spread that the Pistons Syndicate had someone on the inside. Reportedly, it was the Detroit timekeeper, a man in a position to manipulate seconds on the end of each play to either add or subtract time from the game clock. Supposedly, the syndicate bet 'over' when he added time and 'under' when he subtracted it.

The only problem with this revelation was that it wasn't true. Bookmakers finally proved this to themselves when they were allowed to review the tapes of several Detroit games. A lot of the bet takers timed the games themselves and found that there was no manipulation of the clock.

At UFC 123, there was no "inside job" to save Harris or ensure the over, but whoever was working the horn and clock screwed Falcao out of a chance for a submission victory.

With love affair in Japan maybe Overeem doesn't need the UFC

Alistair Overeem has been on a quite tear in and out the ring. Since 2007, he's ripped through his MMA and K-1 fights, winning 14-of-16. He's also wrecked weight rooms around the world. At 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, he possesses one of the most impressive physiques in the fight game. Plain and simple, he looks like a heavyweight champ.

Japan is fascinated with the Dutchman. His endorsement and merchandising potential in Japan is massive. Overeem, 30, released another great episode in his documentary series "The Reem." It's a nice look into the Japanese culture and its relationship with star athletes from the West.

Overeem's future will be interesting to track. When Dana White questions his standing in the heavyweight rankings, in what may be an effort to push him towards the UFC, should "The Reem" even pay attention?

It depends on what Overeem wants.

"For me, it's all about my career and my success. And my financial situation. On the other hand I'm kind of proud to represent K-1," Overeem said. "I think I've grown as a striker. I think the striking has really developed me as an MMA fighter. I want to win that (2010 K-1 WGP) title. I want to prove to the world that I'm unique, a champion in MMA (and) a champion in K-1."

If he wants to fight the best in MMA - and that's certainly a debatable topic when it comes to heavyweights - then he'll eventually make his way to the UFC.

If Overeem covets the freedom of fighting both MMA and kickboxing, then he'll never fight for Zuffa.

There's also the issue of money. Just look at the endorsement career of someone like Bob Sapp, to witness how much potential the Japanese market holds for elite fighters who have that certain look. If Overeem came to the UFC and eventually won the title, he could make a killing in the U.S. If he fell short and was just one of many on the massive UFC roster, then most major U.S. corporations would have zero familiarity with him and he'd probably lose out on some serious cash.

Overeem is currently ranked No. 8 in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings. He's ahead of UFC heavyweights like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Cheick Kongo, Brendan Schaub and Roy Nelson. Should he yearn for a spot with America's biggest promotion or is it counterproductive to his career?

Trainer Joe Goossen discussed the recent victory by Manny Pacquiao, the recent loss by the fighter he works with, Jesus Soto-Karass (pictured at right, on the left), and, also, Floyd Mayweather.

Pacquiao (53-2-1, 38 knockouts), who is handled by Top Rank Promotions, is coming off of an HBO pay-per-view televised victory over Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs), which added the WBC's vacant junior middleweight (154 pounds) crown to the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) belt that he had already owned.

On the Pacquiao-Margarito under card, Soto-Karass (24-5-3, 16 KOs) lost a disputed decision to Mike Jones (23-0, 18 KOs), who is pictured on the far right.

UFC 122: Amir Sadollah Beats Peter Sobotta by Unanimous Decision

by Michael David SmithFormer Ultimate Fighter winner Amir Sadollah easily defeated Germany's own Peter Sobotta Saturday at UFC 122 in Oberhausen, Germany, taking a unanimous decision.

"He's a super tough guy, definitely on his way up," Sadollah said afterward of the 23-year-old Sobotta.

But it was the 30-year-old Sadollah who was clearly the superior fighter in the Octagon on Saturday. Although Sobotta fought hard, this fight was never really in doubt.

David Haye cannot dictate terms to Klitschkos, says brothers' manager

? Haye accused of making excuses by Klitschos' agent
? British fighter says next year could be his last

Bernd Boente, the manager of Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, has accused David Haye of making another excuse after the WBA champion insisted he would not travel to Germany to fight the brothers.

Haye said earlier this week: "I want the fight in London ? I don't want to go to Germany. I went out to Germany to win my title [against Nikolai Valuev last November] and I want my defining fight to be on British soil. This is my last year in the sport and there is no doubt it is going to be my best year ? I want to go and clear out the heavyweight division. They've had enough fights in Germany."

Wladimir holds the IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring titles, while Vitali is the WBC heavyweight champion. After Haye defended his WBA belt in a three-round virtual walkover against Audley Harrison in Manchester on Saturday, the 30-year-old is conscious he requires a credible opponent, especially as he is insisting that next year will be his last before retirement.

A fight against either Klitschko would provide this, and prove a lucrative return from pay-per-view, but Boente questioned whether Haye really wants to meet them. He told BoxingScene.com: "I spoke with Wladimir and Vitali and we believe that David Haye is just looking for another excuse. He is setting up so many preconditions that making the fight will be impossible. If you remember last year he asked for no options, so we gave him no options. Then he complained that he wanted 50-50, so we gave him 50-50. Then he comes back and says he wants all of the money from English television. And now he wants the fight in England.

"If we don't get 50 per cent of the English television, a fight with Wladimir or Vitali will never happen. He doesn't tell us what to do. I want to be 100% clear, we will never agree to anything David Haye sets up or tells us to do. We said England is an option for the fight, but the fight will take place where we can make the most money. And it doesn't necessarily have to be Germany. It could be anywhere.

"If England is where we can make the most money, then we'll go there. But the fight will happen where we can make the most money. If Haye is going to tell us that it can only happen in England, then we will never agree to start negotiations. A negotiation is where everyone comes to the table with open minds and together they make a deal. But if he is going to start telling us what to do, the fight won't happen."

Still-evolving Davis ready for pressure at UFC 123

DETROIT -- Before taking on Tim Boetsch at UFC 123, UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis had to face a tough ask. He was in the spotlight at the Palace of Auburn Hills during the Pistons-Lakers game. Davis was given 24 seconds to hit as many free throws as he could. (Watch it here.) For each bucket he hit, $200 was donated to Pistons Care.

By the time he left the court, $1600 was donated. He said he felt more pressure going on the court than he ever has in the Octagon.

"Definitely free throws. Wrestling is what I know, it's what I'm good at. Anything kind of, sort of related to wrestling, I'm good with. Free throws? No," Davis said.

Though he hit eight free throws, he isn't breaking any stereotypes about wrestlers not being able to hoop.

"Let's not wave it off. It can be pushed to the back to the things people say about wrestlers."

Davis was a national champion wrestler for Penn State, and is most comfortable doing that which revolves around wrestling.

"Everything works its way back to wrestling"

"Everything with me works its way back to wrestling. To me, MMA is like wrestling, and I don't know why I've been wrestling for so long and not been punching. Wrestling is so much fun when you can punch people. I don't know why I haven't been doing it."

Davis works with both Alliance MMA in San Diego and American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. He never wants to get too comfortable as a fighter, so he challenges himself by working with everyone from UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez to bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. He's learned something from every fighter he's been around.

"I was helped by Jon Fitch and Cain Velasquez, except, most of his tips hurt. I'm always asking for help and they're more than happy to give it to me. Brandon Vera, too, really gave me a sharp kickboxing look," Davis said. "[Cruz] does a bunch of things that blow my mind. When you can move with a guy his speed, and land a few punches, you've got to be in good position and be able to move. He's definitely helped me get my footwork down and be ready to strike."

Davis' striking game is still evolving. He wants to be exciting, but is more focused on winning.

"You can go for a spinning backfist and miss it, or you hit a straight right. I think people will remember the spinning backfist, but if you get knocked out, no one's going to thank you for going for it. There's no style points in MMA. I stick to what I'm good at, and I stick to my game."

His hunger to learn, wrestling pedigree and natural talent make Davis an exciting prospect, but he's not letting it get to his head.

"You can't allow anyone to tell you your worth. That's both positive and negative. If someone tells you that you're the worst in the world, you can't believe that. If someone tells you you're the best in the world, you can't believe that either. You gotta be who you are and know where you're at. I know I get beat up in the gym every day, so it's no mystery. I'm not ready for a title shot."

Early End to First Round Cost Maiquel Falcao at UFC 123

Filed under:

Maiquel Falcao has been criticized for his handling of the third round in his UFC 123 win over Gerald Harris, with UFC President Dana White admonishing Falcao that he was wrong to play it safe after winning the first two rounds on the judges' scorecards. White said his message to Falcao after the third round was that "This isn't the Ultimate Staring Competition, it's the Ultimate Fighting Championship."

But while it's true that Falcao was unimpressive in the third round, it's been widely overlooked that the fight never should have gone to the third round -- or even the second round.

In fact, Falcao was about to submit Harris at the end of the first round, but the horn to end the round sounded seven seconds early, depriving Falcao of what almost certainly would have been a first-round submission victory.
