Ellenberger uses the power of Twitter to call out 'hated' Shields

UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger wants a piece of Jake Shields, and he's using his mouth to try to make it happen. Never mind that Shields has already cemented his title shot with a win over Martin Kampmann, and that Ellenberger is in line behind Jon Fitch and Carlos Condit, a fighter who has beaten Ellenberger. He wants Shields, and he is using the power of Twitter to try to sway the powers-that-be in the UFC.

Ellenberger -- who has recent TKO wins over John Howard and Mike Pyle -- has called out Shields several times on Twitter in the last few days, questioning Shields' title shot immediately after the fight, then going on to say:

Ellenberger isn't the first fighter to use a strategy of asking for fights to move up for a bout. Dan Hardy, "King Mo" Lawal and Ben Saunders have all gotten a shot at top fights by simply asking for them. Ellenberger would have to clear a lot of hurdles to get a shot at Shields before Shields fights either Georges St. Pierre or Josh Koscheck for the UFC welterweight title, but stranger things have happened in MMA.

UPDATE: Cagewriter spoke with Ellenberger via text, and he said that both Jake Shields and the UFC have not responded to his tweets. "But it's only a matter of time. Fake Shields is a fraud. Excuse me, Miss Piggy is a fraud," Ellenberger said. Why Miss Piggy?

"When he fights, he reminds me of Miss Piggy, with hs softness and feminine charm."

Ellenberger's beef with Shields comes from before both fighters were with the UFC. He says that he had a signed contract to fight Shields, but Shields' father (and manager) pulled him out of the bout because it was a bad match-up. Ellenberger admits that Condit and Fitch also have a claim on a bout with Shields, but, "I hate him more."

UFC 121 press-conference notes: bonuses, retirement and more

With all that happened during UFC 121, the UFC and media had to get together to talk about it. The news from the UFC 121 postfight press conference:

-- Fight of the Night bonuses were given to Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago, Submission of the Night was awarded to Daniel Roberts and the new heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez won Knockout of the Night. Each bonus was worth $70,000.

-- Dana White said that when watching the monitors during the main event, he thought he saw Brock Lesnar verbally submit to the Cain Velasquez, but Velasquez said he didn't hear that.

-- Velasquez said that he worked on the exact gameplan that he executed to win the fight, drilling the single leg takedown with Olympic wrestler and Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier.

-- Jake Shields admitted that dropping down to welterweight from middleweight did take its toll.

"I don't want to make excuses, but that was the first time that I've been at that weight in a long time." UFC president Dana White said that Shields did earn the welterweight title shot with the win over Kampmann. Shields will get his shot after the UFC

-- Though he lost tonight, former UFC champ Tito Ortiz balked at the mention that he was near retirement.

"Not even close to the end of my career. I need to get back to wrestling. I need to get back to my roots," Ortiz said. "The last few years, I've been through a lot, but I'm not a quitter. I'm healthy. I'm going to continue on. It sucks to lose, but I'm a person who will suck it up and continue on."

Ortiz did not make any excuses for the loss and said that he was 100 percent healthy for the fight with Matt Hamill.

-- Dana White said that he likes Diego Sanchez at welterweight, calling him big, strong and aggressive at that weight. Sanchez said that he is willing to do whatever the UFC wants, but White clarified that the weight class he fights at is Sanchez's decision.

-- Brock Lesnar was not present at the press conference.

Ovince St. Preux vs. Antwain Britt at Strikeforce Challengers

Filed under:

I've frequently questioned the matchmaking decisions on Strikeforce's Challengers shows, so let me praise an example of matchmaking done right: Strikeforce announced Friday that Ovince St. Preux will take on Antwain Britt on the November 19 Challengers card.

This is an exciting fight that works as a good challenge for both St. Preux and Britt at this stage in their respective careers, and a great showcase for the winner.

Robert Garcia Quips: Beware of Metal in Antonio Margarito's Wraps

Antonio Margarito
has claimed no knowledge of the illegal hand wrappings in his gloves that led to a scandal that cost him his American boxing license for more than a year, and the actions of the ex-champion's present trainer, Robert Garcia, in a FanHouse video by Elie Seckbach will do little to silence the fighter's detractors.

Shortly after Margarito (38-6, 27 knockouts) is shown slamming his fists against a body pad being held by Garcia in the ring during a recent media day workout, Garcia dons a thick, crescent-shaped, silver slab of metal that is draped across the knuckles of his right fist.

Garcia then jokes that not only was Margarito wearing the metal slab beneath his gloves while sparring moments ago, but that he will also do so during his Nov. 13, HBO pay per view televised Top Rank Promotions battle opposite WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs), the latter of whom takes a 12-fight winning streak that includes eight KOs into their clash in pursuit of an eighth title in as many different weight classes.

Prior to his ninth-round knockout loss to Shane Mosley in January of 2009, Mosley's trainer, Naazim Richardson, discovered a plaster-like substance in one of the gloves of Margarito that was removed and confiscated prior to Margarito's defeat.

"That's [metal] what he [Richardson] found.Do you believe that? He [Margarito] got caught," said a chuckling Garcia, later adding, "That's what fell out when Naazim Richardson saw it. ."

Margarito, who has claimed that his former trainer, Javier Capetillo, acted alone, was banned a month later and did not receive a license until being granted one by Texas in August.

But that has not stopped many observers in the boxing community, including Pacquiao and his popular, outspoken trainer, Freddie Roach, from speculating that Margarito not only knew that his hands were wrapped illegally, but that his gloves may have been loaded against vanquished rivals such as Kermit Cintron and Miguel Cotto, who were savagely beaten and bloodied before being stopped by Margarito.

Surfploytation by Damian Fulton

Brand new work by Damian Fulton on show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in LA, California from July 2 - August 1, 2010

Damian Fulton is fascinated by the dichotomy and duality of Los Angeles seaside culture. The proximity of one of the world's most diverse and congested cities to the Pacific coast provides fertile material for Damian's dark take on the California dream. Perhaps it's in the water.

Surfploytation continues Damian's twisted ride down PCH where Surf City is way more Gotham than groovy. Car chases, girls with guns, noir nostalgia, a visual narrative that reads like conceptual art for a fictional Surfploytation movie. For this show, experimentation with new materials native to his environment, balsa wood and fiberglass, skate decks, and surfboard fins, have this new work amped up to 11.

Before focusing on his own vision, Damian helped, Disneyland, Marvel Productions, and various magazines find theirs.

Relay glory to shoot-out gloom: Ten things we learned in Delhi

The deeds were even greater than the expectations ? but Britain were taught a few lessons at the Commonwealth Games, too

Charles van Commenee's butt-kicking is paying off

After the European Championships in Barcelona, Charles van Commenee, the UK Athletics head coach, slated both the men's and women's 100m relay teams as "diabolical" and "a disgrace" after they failed to qualify from their heats. In Delhi both won gold, which they were quick to dedicate to Van Commenee. "Charles gave us a kick up the backside but it did us good," Montell Douglas said. "He's what UKA needed," Mark Lewis-Francis added. "He says it like it is." The understrength athletics team won 26 medals in all, eight more than they managed at Melbourne in 2006.

Tom Daley is even better than his coach suspected

Alexei Evangulov, Tom Daley's coach, admitted that he thought winning the world championships at such a young age would ruin Daley's career. Later he added that now he knows he was wrong about that. Daley was much stronger mentally than even Evangulov expected. After his toughest year yet, in which he has suffered two major injuries, Daley won two gold medals in Delhi and he thrived under the intense pressure of the 10m platform final, when he won his duel with the Olympic champion Matt Mitcham by producing a dive that earned him perfect 10s from the judges.

Zoe Smith is going to be a star at the London Olympic Games in 2012

Smith is 16, the youngest English weightlifter to take part in the Commonwealth Games and the first British woman ever to win a medal in the sport. She took bronze in the 58kg category, and was still disappointed with her performance. That is because she can, and will, do even better. She lives in Greenwich, south-east London, is polite, pretty and articulate. The British public are going to love her. There will be a lot more girls taking up weightlifting in 2013.

There is a way back for drug cheats

Four years after finishing his ban for using EPO, the Scottish cyclist David Millar won gold in the time trial and bronze in the road race. Millar got an exemption from Commonwealth Games Scotland that allowed him to compete in Delhi because of the work he has done warning young athletes about drugs and his position on the athletes' committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency. His reformation has only got more publicity after his performances here. Should the British Olympic Association allow him to race at London 2012?

The British swimming team have never been better ...

Rebecca Adlington and Liam Tancock won two golds apiece, but it is not just the elite swimmers who are performing well. The entire squad has been infected with Adlington's confidence. Everywhere you look there are medal contenders and winners, from the 27-year-old James Goddard, who also won two golds, right down to the 16-year-old Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, who made two finals. With Scotland's Robbie Renwick winning gold and Wales' Jazz Carlin taking a bronze and a silver, British swimming has never looked so strong.

... but the cycling team are not as healthy as we hoped

The British teams purposely sent understrength squads to Delhi, choosing to give competition exposure to a lot of young riders. While there were some promising performances, nobody produced the break-out ride that would have marked them out as a star in the making ahead of the Olympics. Australia secured 14 of the 18 golds, England won none.

Maybe the boxing selectors did make a boo-boo

Haroon Khan's domestic record in England was nowhere near good enough to win him selection for the Games. But after he made so much noise about deciding to compete for Pakistan because of what he said was the shoddy way he had been treated, he would have looked stupid indeed if he had bombed out. But he beat Wales' Andrew Selby, and while all the British boxers in his division will go home empty-handed, Khan won bronze. He can walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

Linford Christie still has a role to play in athletics

He has become something of a pariah and was denied accreditation so he could not come to the Commonwealths, but his influence was still obvious on the track. Mark Lewis-Francis won silver in the 100m after two years in the doldrums, and Katherine Endacott came back from a five-year break from the sport to take silver in the women's 100m. Both athletes said they owed their success to their new coach, Christie.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger

Fran Halsall won five medals on a bread and water diet. Will Sharman checked himself out of hospital to run the 110m hurdles final. Rebecca Adlington won bronze in the 200m free after getting up at 4am to get to the pool in time for her heat. David Millar thrived in 41C heat in the road race. Andrew Baggaley won bronze in the table-tennis doubles despite being so sick he lost half a stone in the two weeks before the competition. Everybody agreed that it was a tough event, and they all added that they were stronger for coming through it. "I've learned a lot about what I am capable of" was the refrain of the Games.

It is not just the England football team who need to practise penalties

The England men's hockey team lost 5-4 in a shoot-out in their semi-final against India, and 5-3 in a shoot-out in their bronze-medal match against New Zealand.

Hughes says Tito might be finished

Matt Hughes knows how Tito Ortiz feels. At 37 years old, the former welterweight champ has made enough money to walk away from the sport just like Tito. And the body certainly can't feel like it did when they were 25. The difference is Hughes, free of major surgeries, is still competitive while Ortiz, 35, is having trouble getting a win. Hughes commented on Tito's latest loss at UFC 121:

"I consider myself an old guy and when some of the older fighters fight, I find myself interested. Tito was on the card, against (Matt) Hamill and I didn’t think there was any way for Tito to win," said Hughes on Matt-Hughes.com.

Keep in mind, Hughes and Ortiz have never really been chummy.

"Tito’s got that clothing line out, Team Punishment, and when I see people wearing the shirts, I always tease them that it should be "Team Punished;" but I would even go out on a limb and say that’s the last time we see Tito in the UFC," said Hughes.

The UFC cut veteran Patrick Cote today. Is Tito next?

There's a few factors to consider. He could fight for another promotion and help raise their profile. But at $250,000 a fight is it worth it to keep Ortiz around so he can't fight elsewhere? He's still one of the bigger names to casual fans and does a nice job promotionally. With what looks a new network television deal on the way for the UFC and new audiences on the horizon in India and China, the promotion certainly has the resources to reward Ortiz for being one of the guys who carried the whole deal in the early 2000's.

On a side note, Hughes deserves the same sort of treatment. He'd be great spokesperson before events. He made a good point in his UFC 121 commentary about the UFC broadcast team needing some balance. Hughes called out analyst Joe Rogan for going overboard on how dominant Jake Shields' grappling was versus Martin Kampmann.

What if Hughes was the third man in the booth from time-to-time and actually took over the postfight role of Rogan in the cage? HBO thrives with a three-man, it might be time for the UFC to consider doing the same.

Alan Belcher Hopes to Fight by May, Sets Sights on UFC Middleweight Title

Filed under:

Sometimes a moment of dread becomes a moment of joy. That's just what happened to UFC middleweight Alan Belcher, who walked into his doctor's office on Tuesday morning with nervousness about what he might hear regarding a possible career-ending injury to his right eye, and walked out with a green light to begin full contact in January.

Belcher had won his last two UFC bouts and was in Brazil preparing to face Demian Maia when his eye started giving him trouble. It was soon discovered to be a detached retina, an injury that has cost many fighters their careers. He was immediately put on the sideline and underwent surgery to correct the problem in August.

Now, with his recovery going well, his ophthalmologist, Dr. Chris Semple, has cleared him to do workouts including running, jumping and weight-lifting. Meanwhile, a return to sparring and eventually to the cage will have to wait a bit longer, leaving Belcher chomping at the bit to begin his march to the top.

Slow Down Expectations for Jose Aldo, Jon Jones

Urijah Faber, Jose AldoThe two hottest young fighters in MMA are the 24-year-old WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and the 23-year-old UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones. UFC President Dana White knows that, but he also wants fans to know that Aldo won't be rushed into fighting as a UFC lightweight until he wants to, and Jones won't be rushed into a light heavyweight title fight before he's ready.

And so if you're hoping to see Aldo in the Octagon or Jones fighting for a belt, don't hold your breath.

White said on The Fight Fix on CSN Washington that Aldo had a chance to move into the UFC lightweight division and fight Kenny Florian, but Aldo chose instead to keep defending his featherweight belt. And he said Jones won't fight for the light heavyweight title for at least a year.

UFC 121: Tom Lawlor Dominates Patrick Cote

by Michael David SmithTom Lawlor put on a one-sided beat-down of Patrick Cote on the first televised bout of Saturday's UFC 121 fight card, dominating Cote on the ground for three rounds on the way to an easy -- and not particularly exciting -- unanimous decision.

Lawlor grabbed Cote, held him against the fence and then took him down in the early going, and that was exactly where he wanted to be. They spent the rest of the round on the ground with Lawlor fairly well dominating, hitting Cote and almost finishing him with an arm-triangle choke, which Cote broke free from with the help of an illegal grab of the fence. It was an easy 10-9 round for Lawlor.

'King' Mo Lawal: I'm Done Holding My Tongue

Former Strikeforce champion "King" Mo Lawal thinks he did several things wrong in his loss to Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante back in August.

For one, he didn't use his wrestling as much as he should have, he said. For another, he was much too humble before the fight. No, that last part is not a typo.

"King" Mo - the man who is never at a loss for words, particularly when those words help him explain how much better he is than most of his peers - feels it was partly his pre-fight humility that hurt him in the cage.

"I wasn't me," he told MMA Fighting at last week's EA Sports MMA media event. "I thought I was going to win, but I tried to play all that humble sh-t. What it comes to is, that's not me. I know I'm the best, and I've got to be able to talk like I'm the best. I'm not going to do all that, 'Oh, he's a tough opponent' stuff. Not anymore. F--- that stuff. It doesn't work for me. I tried to do that so I wouldn't get this backlash, but it doesn't work for me. So now, people don't like me? F--- them."

The night Muhammad Ali's legend was reborn ? and the party that followed | Frank Keating

Forty years ago today the star-packed celebrations prompted by Muhammad Ali beating Jerry Quarry were only just dying down

Forty years ago this very morning, we woke blearily from a feverish jam-packed party all?nighter which had jubilantly swirled around a whole floor of the swish Regency Hyatt hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

In a way, 20th-century sport and celebrity culture were never the same again. It was the morning after the prodigal prodigy Muhammad Ali had contemptuously defeated the game white boxer Jerry Quarry in three rounds to mark his return to the ring after a ban of three and a half years for refusing conscription into the US army.

What a swellegant elegant party it was. While just about the whole world and his wife were there in spirit, of course, the elite of the American civil rights movement was in rapturous attendance in actual animate fact ? Jesse Jackson, Julian Bond, Ralph Abernathy, Mrs Coretta King, Arthur Ashe, Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, Andrew and Whitney Young and such harmonious top-team collectives, each member flamboyantly dressed to the nines, as the Temptations and the Supremes.

Ali's biographer Thomas Hauser recalled all of three decades later that night of 26 October 1970 as "like something out of Gone with the Wind and probably the greatest collection of black power and black money ever assembled up to that time. They weren't boxing fans, they were idolaters." The New Yorker essayist George Plimpton also remembered that invasion of the Harlem peacocks in their enormous purple Cadillacs: "I'd never seen crowds as fancy, especially the men ? felt hatbands and feathered capes, and the stilted shoes, the heels like polished ebony, and many smoking stuff in odd meerschaum pipes."

It was half a dozen years since Ali had been listed 1-Y in the Army Draft Board's intelligence test, a level considered unfit for service; but in February 1966 he was suddenly reclassified as 1-A and told to be ready to be posted to the Vietnam conflict. The boxer applied at once for exemption on conscientious grounds as a minister of religion (Islam): "I ain't got no quarrel with them Vietcong."

That single sentence reverberated around the world. But in much of the United States it was considered near treason. It took Ali's 43-month banishment from the ring ? as the body bags continued to be flown home from Asia ? for the popular sentiment to change, particularly among the young. Had the illiterate young boxer, after all, uttered a crucially salient sentence? Traitor was turning into a hero ? and with nice irony it was Lester Maddox, the reactionary governor of Georgia, previously a club-swinging civil rights basher, now suddenly in need of some black votes, who broke ranks and allowed Ali's boxing comeback to be staged in Atlanta. Thus was set the scene for quite a party that October night.

Who most smartly twigged the resonance of the party invitation was probably the square-shouldered flat?nosed puncher Quarry, a competent but inconsistent operator, and one who could usually be relied upon to succumb when it mattered most. Which, of course, he did on this auspicious occasion. But what if Quarry's eyebrow had not been expertly scalpelled open by one of Ali's short corkscrewed right?handers at the beginning of the third? Might the desperately ring-rusty, out-of-puff Ali have soon been flattened by the journeyman? Defeat by Quarry would have writ finis and kaput on any miraculous resurrection; the legend would have died, the fabled Second Coming script would have been torn up there and then, and Muhammad Ali would have been just a footnote in history.

It was a quarter of a century until I was to see Ali again in Atlanta. Canonisation was total ? but the saint who opened in 1996 the Atlanta Olympic Games was now a martyred, stumbling, dumb, half-tragic hero.

October remains a potently seminal month for Ali idolaters. The two most far-famed laurel-decked contests ? 1974's so-called Rumble in the Jungle and, a year later, The Thrilla in Manila ? both took place in October. And that ostentatious Atlanta happening 40 years ago yesterday was halfway house between 29 October 1960, the day the loose-limbed, appealingly cocksure 18-year-old Olympic champion called Cassius Clay had won his first professional six-rounder in his Kentucky hometown, and all of 20 Octobers later at Las Vegas when a bewildered, broken-up and hurting Ali wretchedly ventured on a doleful attempt to regain his title against the apologetic new champion Larry Holmes. Not so much a contest, more an execution. Regicide, you might say.

Ali hardly landed even a token blow and after 10 excruciating rounds his devoted trainer, Angelo Dundee, mercifully announced: "That's it, no more, it's the end of the ballgame."

Lombard and Fujii get the spotlight this week

They're both badly in need of more attention from casual fight fans and with no other major action on the schedule this week, Hector Lombard and Megumi Fujii get to take centerstage. A powerful middleweight on the male side and the woman some call the best pound-for-pound in the world, fight at Bellator 34 on Thursday night.

Lombard (27-2-1) could be on the verge of exploding into the mainstream. Without a loss since late 2006, he's got it all. The Cuban certainly looks like a fighter with a thick build that would stack up against most NFL running backs. Lombard also hits the cage with a killer instinct. His last two fights, wins over Herbert Goodman and Jay Silva, lasted a combined 44 seconds. Remember Silva had just gone the distance in a pair of UFC fights against Chris Leben and C.B. Dollaway.

The 32-year-old has a special pedigree having competed for Cuba's Judo squad at the 2000 Olympics. The No. 18 middleweight in the world according to the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings, Lombard may be a bit underrated. He just hasn't gotten a crack at the best of the best. He'll face Alexander Shlemenko, who is 15-1 since 2007. Both guys are sluggers, so don't blink.

During Bellator's 115-pound women's tourney, Fujii (22-0) has certainly lived up to her lofty reputation. The submission specialist has blown threw her three American opponents in the tournament. She'll have to deal with the biggest fighter in the field to win the title. Zoila Frausto (9-1) cuts down from over 130 pounds to reach the 115 limit. If you're not a fan of female fighting, this one might change your mind. The fighters down at 115 are similar to the men at 155 and below. The pace is quick and there are no stamina issues.

Brock Lesnar on Chael Sonnen: 'I Don't Know Who He Is'

by Michael David SmithChael Sonnen established himself as the UFC's ultimate trash talker this summer in the run-up to his fight with Anderson Silva. But that trash talk began to ring hollow when Sonnen lost, and any talk from Sonnen at all disappeared after Sonnen got busted for steroids and completely clammed up, other than releasing a statement that he plans to appeal the positive drug test.

And now Brock Lesnar has delivered the ultimate put-down, one that even the loud-mouthed Sonnen likely wouldn't have much to say about.

After ESPN's Jim Rome read to Lesnar some of the trash that Sonnen has talked about the heavyweight champion, including Sonnen's claim that "I'd slap you in your face and you wouldn't do anything about it, Brock," Lesnar had a simple retort: "I don't know who he is."

Falling Action: Best and Worst of UFC 121

Filed under:

The last time I heard a crowd go as crazy as the fans in Anaheim did when Cain Velasquez beat Brock Lesnar at UFC 121, they were all getting free cars from Oprah. The fight fans on Saturday night may have had to drive home in the same boring old rides they came in, but after that furious four-minute main event I guarantee you no one was complaining.

But UFC 121 gave us more to talk about than just the main event. All across the undercard careers were being salvaged and lost, and at least one fighter managed to leave the Octagon victorious but still riding a wave of boos.

Let's break it all down and look at our big winners, losers, and everything in between.

Lesnar back to wrestling? White says absolutely not

Brock Lesnar was mauled on Saturday and now some bloggers and fans are questioning his desire to be a fighter. Are they onto something? He's split his last two fights but took a vicious beating in both. The money could be bigger back in wrestling for Lesnar. Maybe Lesnar's having second thoughts about MMA? These assertions all seemed ridiculous until "The Undertaker" pulled his little stunt on Saturday night.

Update -TMZ spoke with UFC president Dana White who threw cold water over all the rumors:

Despite an intense standoff between Lesnar and Undertaker at UFC 121 this weekend -- in which Undie challenged Brock to a fight -- UFC president Dana White tells us, "Brock Lesnar is still under contract with the UFC ...  he is not going to wrestle in the WWE. He cannot wrestle, box or fight anywhere else."

The WWE star broke from an Octagon-side interview (0:43 mark) to challenge Lesnar as he walked back to the lockerroom. The short confrontation has got the wrestling world buzzing. Now there are rumors that the WWE wants to or has made a big offer for the former UFC champ to return at Wrestlemania 27 in April.

Yahoo! Sports' Dave Meltzer is a longtime pro wrestling observer and he just doesn't believe a Lesnar return to WWE in 2011 is possible for several reasons.

Jonathan Kamis from the O.C. Register said that White had some issues with Lesnar after the fight. It couldn't have been over this, right?

Matt Hamill Opens Up After Tito Ortiz Win About Controversial Pre-Fight Comments

What you need to know from this week on 'The Ultimate Fighter'

On this week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," we have one episode, but two fights. What does that mean? You'll have to read on to find out.

Good problem to have of the week: With their first win, Team Koscheck is stressed about how to pick the next fight. They see it as a bad but good situation.

Under your skin of the week: Team GSP is very upset by the way Team Koscheck has celebrated their win. Koscheck and the coaches stopped by and picked on Michael Johnson, who was clearly ticked off by it. Somehow, these fighters don't get that getting mad about it is exactly what Koscheck wants.

Voice of reason of the week: Georges St. Pierre sat his team down and told them not to let Team Koscheck's antics get under their skin. That makes sense ... so clearly, that advice won't be followed.

Trash talk guessing game No. 1 -- Who said:

I just go out there and kick and punch and knee.

I'm not like these other guys that he's fought.

I want him to feel pain.

First fight of the week: Cody McKenzie (Team GSP) vs. Marc Stevens (Team Koscheck)

Round 1: Stevens shoots in for a quick takedown and McKenzie sinks in his trademark guillotine. Stevens is put to sleep, and Koscheck is clearly disgusted.

After the fight, the Stevens locker room is dead silent. Koscheck had no explanation to offer his fighters, and they had to head in to the gym for the next fight announcement. Team GSP had control, and they put up their fighter Jonathan Brookins against Sevak Magakian. GSP calls Brookins his secret weapon. In case you're unfamiliar with Brookins' work -- which maybe GSP was -- he is one of the many fighters that Jose Aldo destroyed on the way to the WEC championship.

Stupid prank of the week: "Ahhh, Josh, where you put my sandals?" Koscheck hid GSP's sandals, which is the one of the weakest pranks in the history of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Trash talk guessing game No. 2 -- Who said:

I want to go up, like flowers to the sun.

This is like, win or die, man.

Second fight of the week: Jonathan Brookins (Team GSP) vs. Sevak Magakian (Team Koscheck)

Round 1: Brookins earned the first cheer of the fight when he supplexed Magakian down to the ground. Though Magakian stood up quickly, Brookins stayed on his back. After some maneuvering, he sunk in a standing rear naked choke and put Magakian to sleep.

Body count of the week: Two fights, two fighters put to sleep. Team GSP took both fights this week, leaving one last fight for Team Koscheck to try to dig out of the hole next week.

Ben Askren Beats Lyman Good for Bellator Welterweight Title

by Michael David SmithBen Askren put his Olympic wrestling skills on display Thursday night at Bellator 33, controlling Lyman Good on the ground for the better part of five rounds to win a unanimous decision and take the Bellator welterweight title. It was an entertaining fight, with Askren controlling most of the way but Good nearly pulling out an Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen style finish from his back in the closing moments.

"It feels great," Askren said afterward. "Bellator builds warriors, and even those who hate me have to admit, I'm a freakin' warrior."

Cowherd says UFC 121 viewer numbers will crush MLB playoffs

Memories of MMA in 2004 seem like 20 years ago. Those were the days when the sport couldn't sniff coverage from any mainstream media outlet. UFC 50 drew just over 6,000 paid customers in Atlantic City and the pay-per-view only had 40,000 buys. Now we're debating whether UFC 121 will "disappoint" at only 800,000 buys or if Brock Lesnar haul in another audience of one million-plus? Television exposure and more coverage from big outlets has grown sport exponentially. We saw some great examples today. In the middle football season and the Major League Baseball playoffs, UFC was all over ESPN on the television side and ESPNRadio spent some quality time talking MMA when Tito Ortiz appeared on Colin Cowherd's nationally syndicated show.

Cowherd lambasted the old guard media for not recognizing how huge MMA is with 18-30 year olds.

"American newspapers are dying for 18-30 year old readers," said Cowherd. "Do you realize that Brock Lesnar and Tito Ortiz on pay-per-view will have more 19-year-old viewers than the American League Championship series on free TV?"

Cowherd introduced the conversation with Ortiz by saying that he recently sat down with four 20-something males from Boston and asked them what their favorite sports were. The 46-year-old said he was surprised when none of the guys mentioned the Red Sox at the top of the list. They listed NFL first and MMA second.

SportsCenter was hot and heavy for UFC 121. Brock Lesnar appeared last night and Sports Nation this afternoon. Even Cain Velasquez got a push on SportsCenter this morning.

UFC 121: By the Odds

Filed under:

If the time it took me to get out of the Honda Center parking lot after this afternoon's UFC 121 weigh-ins was any indicator, a vast and enthusiastic mob is about to descend on Anaheim for Saturday night's event. Expect no shortage of Mexican flags when Cain Velasquez enters, and the requisite boos when Brock Lesnar strolls in.

In other words, get ready to see the exact fan response you'd expect after the way the "Primetime" series framed the main event bout.

Now that the match-ups are set and the fighters are hunkered down in their hotel rooms until fight time, let's take a look at how oddsmakers see things playing out on Saturday.
