Enzo Maccarinelli knocked out cold after referee lets Frenkel punch on

? Referee let defenceless fighter continue? Alexander Frenkel wins fight in round sevenFor lovers of sanctioned violence, Nathan Cleverly set the standard on a night of rolling cuts and bruises with an outstanding win that put him in sight of a world title ? and a Finnish referee left a pall of concern over the night when his reluctance to save Enzo Maccarinelli from himself led to his being laid out unconscious on the canvas, the fifth and worst stoppage of a career that is surely over.Maccarinelli, the European and former world cruiserweight champion, came to his fight against the unbeaten German prospect Alexander Frenkel with three first-round wins in his last three fights, after two bad stoppages, and was immediately wobbled by a right. He survived some big hits and a cut eye against a challenger who had stopped 17 of 22 opponents, and was working his way back into the fight until he ran on to a peach of a left hook in round seven and was heavily felled. The Finnish referee Erkki Meronen was incompetent in not stopping it then, and you could not blame Frenkel for landing a following left hook that knocked the clearly defenceless Maccarinelli clean out 30 seconds from the end of round seven. He received oxygen in the ring and was led away, somehow walking.Maccarinelli should not fight again as certainly as Meronon should not referee again.BoxingKevin Mitchellguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
